Lawn Tennis betting markets explained
Every market we publish tips for in lawn tennis settles on a specific question. We only write a call when the data points at that price — the rest of the board stays blank.
Match Winner. A two-way pick on who progresses. No draw and no dead rubbers, which makes it the cleanest market in betting. Best used when surface suits one player's game far better. Typical odds run 1.20 - 4.00.
Correct Set Score. The exact sets scoreline, for example 2-0 or 2-1 in a best-of-three contest. Best used when you are confident in the winner and the manner of it. Typical odds run 1.90 - 6.00.
Total Games Over/Under. Whether the number of games played across the match beats the posted line. Best used when two big servers meet, or a mismatch looks one-sided. Typical odds run 1.75 - 2.00.
Games Handicap. A virtual games head start for the underdog, useful when a favourite should win comfortably. Best used when a short favourite is expected to dominate on serve. Typical odds run 1.70 - 2.10.
First Set Winner. Settles on the opening set only, which sidesteps in-match fitness and momentum swings. Best used when one player is a notoriously fast or slow starter. Typical odds run 1.35 - 3.20.
How we model lawn tennis
These are the inputs that carry the most weight in our lawn tennis model, in roughly the order they matter. Anything not on this list either failed to improve out-of-sample accuracy or duplicated a signal we already had.
- Surface-adjusted Elo, calculated separately for hard, clay, grass and indoor
- Service hold and return break percentages over the last 12 months
- Head-to-head results, but only those played on a comparable surface
- Match load and recovery time, including any five-setters in the previous round
- Retirement and injury history, which is critical in best-of-five events
- Altitude, ball type and roof status, all of which change court speed
